How Pole Dancing is Related With Indian Sport Mallakhamb

Pole dancing has fast become one of the most trendiest dance form all over the world. The rise of the Western world has made this century-old sport practise so popular. If we are going to trace the fascinating history of pole dancing, we could see that this form of dancing is heavily influenced by the century old Indian native sport called Mallakhamb. The people of India have practiced Mallakhamb for hundreds of years. Mallakhamb comes from the word “Malla+Khamb”, where Malla means Gymnast and Khamb means Pole. Historically, Mallakhamb was used as an exercise by wrestlers. They would attack the pole like it was their opponent. The pole allowed them to practice holds and awkward body poses that could be used in the wrestling ring once perfected on the pole.

Over the last few decades, Mallakhamb has evolved into an art of dance, gymnastics and acrobatics. The Westerners have quickly realized the immense potential of this form of exercise and surprisingly it gained meteoric rise in popularity.

Now all over Australia, Europe and the USA, pole dancing has successfully shrugged off the tag of nudity and became a mainstream exercise and dance form. Now people can use their talent of pole dancing for getting high-salaried jobs in various industry verticals. The career option of a pole dancer is truly remarkable.
